Sadness Over Beirut Terror
Marks Annual Dinner of MDA

Participants in the an-
nual Magen David Adom
dinner, honoring Con-
gressman and Mrs. Sander
Levin, held Sunday at Adat
Shalom Synagogue, ex-
pressed horror over the
occurrences in Beirut which
cost the overwhelming
number of American
casualties.
Rep. Levin, accepting the
MDA Distinguished
Humanitarian • Service
Award in his own and his
wife Vicki's behalf, ex-
pressed his personal horror
over the massive crime.
Dr. Leo Shipko,. as chair-
man of the procedures,
joined in such expressions
while outlining the aims of
the Magen David Adom.
He was joined in utter-
_ ing sentiments of deep
horror by Philip
Slomovitz, who made the
presentation address in
which he reviewed the
roles of many members of
the Levin family • in
Jewish and civic activi-
ties, and in the invocation
by Carmi Slomovitz and
the closing prayer by
Rabbi Herbert Eskin.
All the speakers pointed
to the need of the MDA serv-
ices in Israel and expressed
hope that they will be for
- peace and not be needed to
aid in time of calamities.

president of the women's
committee of the Detroit
Chapter of the American
Red Magen David for Israel,
greeted the honorees and
announced plans for ex-
panded women's MDA ac-
tivities here.
Deep interest in and
appreciation for
cooperative efforts be-
tween the American Red
Cross and the Red Magen
David for Israel was ex-
pressed in greetings by
-Duane. Johnson,' execu-
tive directors, of the Red
Cross in - this area.
Johnson reiterated the

hope that American
encouragement will lead
to acceptance of MDA.
Cantor Harold Orbach led
in the singing of the na-
tional anthems at the
dinner which- was pro-
nounced a success by Dr.
Shipko: Dr. Shipko an-
nounced that generous gifts
at the event - included
financing of three ambu-
lances for MDA in Israel.
The dinner was the first
in the nearly 20-year his-
tory of the MDA activities
in Detroit not attended by
the Michigan MDA found-
ing president, Dr. -John
Mames, who is hospitalized
with a serious illness.
