To Diethelm Conrad, a professor in the University of Marburg's department of Protestant Theology and holder of the university's Chair in Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Archeology and Historical Geography, working on the excavations was not only a chance to learn about the past, but a way to place better, more in- formed pastors on the pul- pit. Prof. Conrad believes that it is important for many of the participating students to learn that the stories of the Bible are in- tertwined to this day with the land of Israel. The waiting period be- tween eating meat and dairy meals varies between Orthodox communities. Among German and West European Jews the custom has been to wait three hours. East European Jews generally waited six hours. Among Dutch Jews the cus- tom was to wait 72 minutes. —Alfred Kolatch From the beginning of the cooperative Univer- sity of Haifa-University of Marburg program, Prof. Conrad has seen it as much more than an exercise in archeology. To him it has been the ve- hicle for developing a package designed to teach understanding, cooperation and arche- ology. Prof. Conrad led the first group of Germans to Tel Acco and since that time his team has been an integral part of the dig, working primarily on the eastern edge of the tel. This year they uncovered an area of housing that dates from the Iron Age. "In the past years of exca- vation we dug through the Hellenistic and Persian levels, which were almost completely destroyed," the professor said. "This Iron Age level is very exciting The walls of the houses are intact. We brought out a large number of artifacts including tools, pottery and an Astarte (fertility god- dess)."
