Five-Day Jerusalem Parley Marked
Jewish Resistance to Nazi Holocaust

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
five-day international con-
ference on Jewish resis-
tance to the Nazis was held
here last week.
Jewish partisans and
soldiers in the Allied armies
gathered from around the
world to meet former
comrades-in-arms from Is-

rael and attempt to correct
what they believe is a dis-
torted "sheep to the slaugh-
ter" concept of Jewish
passivity during the
Holocaust.
Conference participants
estimated that some 50,000
Jews fought as partisans in
occupied Europe, some in
purely Jewish groups,
others in broader under-
ground frameworks.
"I will remember to my
dying day," said Labor
Alignment-Mapam MK
Chaika Grossman, "the
startled shout of an SS
man in the Bialystok
Ghetto: 'The Jews are
fighting.' " In Bialystok,
300 young Jews, poorly
armed, attempted to rush
the perimeter fence and
open an escape route for
their trapped brethren.
Grossman was a leader of
the Bialystok Ghetto up-
rising.
,Stefan Grayek of Tel
Aviv, a leader of an organ-
ization of former partisans
now living in Israel, said of
the Warsaw Ghetto upris-
ing, "Once the fight for our
self-respect began, it was
easier to die."
Other speakers dwelt on
heroism of another kind: the
maintenance of human and
communal values in the
ghettoes and in the camps.
"The revealed great inter-
nal strength," said Sara

tional Religious Party MK

The mass media have
been filled with reports in
recent weeks charging the
Sandanista regime with
being flagrantly anti-
Semitic. The evidence given
for those charges is that
with the ascendency of the
Sandanistas, some 50
Jewish families fled the
country, their community
synagogue was taken over
and their property exprop-
riated.
In addition, the San-
danistas have lined up with
the PLO, gave them a major
office in Managua, and have
followed an anti-Israel line
in the United Nations and
elsewhere.
In recent weeks, the
Sandanistas have re-
pudiated anti-Semitism
and have promised to re-
store the synagogue to
the Jewish community
and to make restitution
for expropriated Jewish
property.
The crucial issue for the
Jewish community is not
their alleged anti-Semitism
but their disastrous anti-
Israel foreign policy and
their deep alliance with
PLO forces. Given their ex-
pansionist Marxist tenden-
cies throughout Central
America, that is the critical
issue for us to cope with, not
the hysterical cries of anti-
Semitism.

Egyptian Official Sees Soviet Role in M.E.

BONN (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Kamal Hassan Ali
of Egypt has told the West
German publication Die
Welt that "sooner or later"
the Soviet Union should
participate in an overall
settlement of the Arab-
Israeli conflict.
In an interview conducted
in Cairo, Ali observed that
the shipment by the Soviet
Union of its SS-21 missiles
to Syria will give that Arab
country a stronger position
in future Mideast ar-
rangements. He._ added:
"This will lead to a Soviet

Holocaust.
The conference was mar-
red by the non-participation
of former U.S. Supreme
Court Justice and UN Am-
bassador Arthur Goldberg
who was to have delivered
the keynote address. The
organizers had booked the
73-year-old jurist to fly
tourist class to Israel. El Al
in New York refused to
allow Goldberg to pay the
difference to upgrade his
ticket to first class. He did
not make the flight.

participation, too."
But according to Ali, the
West should demonstrate
resolve in trying to find a
solution to the conflict on its
own and only then invite
the Soviets to make their
contribution. This contribw
tion would be, he added, in
the form of guarantees that
the Soviets would share
with the Americans.
The Egyptian minister
said that Cairo will not re-
turn its Ambassador to Tel.
Aviv before Israel com-
pletes its evacuation of
Lebanese territory. He said

that Syria also should leave
Lebanon, but the Israelis
must leave first.
