Berman Warns Israel on
Backing Fundamentalists

LONDON (JTA) — Israel
should beware of supporting
right-wing Christian ambi-
tions in the United States,
an American Jewish leader
said here.
Julius Berman, chairman
of the Conference of
Presidents of Major Ameri-
can Jewish Organizations,
was commenting on the
warm relations that former
Premier Menahem Begin of
Israel established with
American fundamentalist
movements such as the
Moral Majority led by the
Rev. Jerry Falwell.
Describing this as one of
the most delicate issues fac-
ing American Jewry, Be-
rman said he did not mind
Israel cultivating good rela-
tions with the Moral Major-
ity elements in the hope
that they would have a
favorable influence on U.S.
foreign policy. But, he said,
"U.S. Jewry does not accept
that Israel should also give
them a quid pro quo over
their internal policies in the
United States."
Berman, who was ac-
companied by Yehuda
Hellman, executive vice
chairman of the
Presidents Conference,
voiced strong approval of
U.S. Secretary of State
George Shultz's efforts to
ensure that any dis-
agreements between the
U.S. and Israel — as for

"without any massive
confrontation."
He also said that Sen.
John Glenn (D-Ohio), who is
seeking the Democratic
Party presidential nomina-
tion, has had some success
in his efforts to "reach out"
to the American Jewish
community.
The substantial number
of Jews who had voted for
Ronald Reagan as President
in the last national election
had shown the Democrats
that American Jewry "can-
not be taken for granted."
Berman held talks with
British Jewish leaders
aimed at strengthening ties
between the Presidents
Conference and its British
counterpart, the Board of
Deputies of British Jews.

He told the British organ-
izations, the traditionally
positive relationship be-
tween the United States
and Israel is "back in har-
ness" and the strains over
President Reagan's Sep-
tember 1982 peace initia-
tive and the war in Lebanon
are now over.
He said the U.S. now
realizes the invalidity of its
initial hope that the so-
called moderate Saudi
Arabia, together with Jor-
dan, would act as the
catalyst towards a Middle
East peace settlement.

JERUSALEM (JNI) — At
President Chaim Herzog's
public Sukka, late last
month, an English Chris-
tian handed the president a
missionary booklet entitled
"When Will the Messiah
Come, An Answer for the
Jewish People."
On the inside cover; the
book was inscribed, "And as
you read, may the Lord open
your eyes and ears for you to
receive." Herzog handed the
book to someone else.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
south Lebanon town of
Nabatiya was placed under
curfew Sunday after a clash
between an Israeli unit and
local villagers. None of the
Israelis were hurt but 10
villagers were injured by
the troops trying to extri-
cate themselves afer two
vehicles were set on fire.
The incident started
when light arms fire and
grenades were fired at the
IDF patrol near the local
market place.
Thousands of local Shi'ite
Moslem workers streamed
out of mosques where they
had been observing a Mos-
lem feast and attacked
other IDF patrols rushing to
the rescue of the group
under attack.

WZO Intensifies
Youth Program

NEW YORK — The
World Zionist Organization
(WZO) has intensified re-
cruiting efforts for its
Jerusalem Program, which
allows American Jewish
students to continue their
own high school studies in
Israel during their senior
year.
"The acceptance of the
Jerusalem Program at the
recent Jewish Agency As-
sembly presents a splendid
opportunity to set new re-
cords for aliya among
American Jewish youths,"
according to Dr. Chaim
Lavy, director of the WZO-
American Section Youth
Aliy a Department.
