sentment following the
announcement, the or-
ganizers say they cannot
change the schedule at
this late date. "We regret
this very much and we
were unaware of the date
of Yom Kippur," Peter
Weidhaas, director of the
fair, said. "But I think
even if I would have
known, we would have to
accept those dates be-
cause they are the only
ones available."
Israeli publishers are
especially perturbed with
book fair officials, noting
that in the past, the delicate
relationships between
Germany and the Jewish
state resulted in highly cor-
dial treatment of Israeli
firms represented at the
Frankfurt fair.
The official Israeli reac-

tion was more measured but
equally unhappy. Menahan
Biala, director of the Israeli
book exhibit, suggested to
Weidhaas that the fair be

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israeli soldier was wounded
in a roadside ambush in
south Lebanon last week, a
military spokesman re-
ported.
The incident occurred
near the Burj-A-Shamali
camp east of Tyre where a
group of men pretending to
repair a disabled car parked
off the road, suddenly
opened fire with small arms
on a passing group of Israeli
soldiers. The assailants es-
caped in the car.

closed amid controversy
this week following the an-
nouncement that the 1984

the dates should be
changed," British publisher
Andre Deutsch said. The
book fair is scheduled for
the first week in October.
Yom Kippur falls on Oct. 6,

slated to end.
