I The Bloms never ac- cepted money for hiding the couple, but the Vre- edenburgs insisted on helping out with food ex- penses. The Vreedenburgs' cover was almost blown one even- ing when the Bloms' young son thought he found "thieves" in the house. The Bloms hid the Vreeden- burgs in a closet and took the young boy up to the attic to show him there was no one there. Following the war, the Vreedenburgs and the Bloms corresponded, often receiving birthday cards from one another. Emanuel Zippori, consul general of Israel to the Midwest, made the presen- tation on behalf of his gov- ernment. The Righteous Gentile Award is given to those non-Jewish individuals who aided Jews, risking their lives under the Nazi occupation. Each case is documented and re- searched by the Yad Vashem Authority. Those so recognized have a tree planfed in their honor on the Avenue of the Righteous walkway at the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem. Sister Carol Rittner of Mercy College met the Bloms in 1981, and learned their story. With JCCoun- cil's assistance, she con- tacted the Israel govern- ment, and sought the recog- nition for the Bloms by Yad Vashem. Sister Carol is currently in Israel, and will plant a tree on the Avenue of the Righteous for the Bloms in absentia. As the Nazis approached, the Bloms offered a refuge to the Vreedenburgs, and the Jewish couple remained hidden in the Blom attic for three years.
