Tribute to Dr. V Recalls Aid to Jews

A Mercy College tribute
to Detroit cancer specialist
Dr. Vainutis K. Vait-
kevicius last month re-
vealed that "Dr. V" was a .
survivor of Auschwitz, hav-
ing been arrested as a teen-
ager with his grandfather
for hiding Jewish children
in Lithuania.
Earlier, his parents had
been sent to Siberia by the
Russians.
Dr. Vaitkevicius did
forced labor in Auschwitz
for nine months. He injured

Argues Nativity
Scene Is Legal

WASHINGTON — Sol-
icitor General Rex E. Lee, a
Reagan Administration
legal official, has argued be-
fore the Supreme Court that
a local government which
included a Nativity scene as
part of an official Christmas
display was not in violation
of the Constitution.
Lee tried to persuade the
court Tuesday that a Fed-
eral appeals court was in
error when it ruled a year
ago that the display of a
city-owned creche by Paw-
tucket, R.I. violated the
Constitutionally required
separation of church and
state.
The Nativity scene was
challenged in Federal court
by a group of local residents
and the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU).
The Reagan Administra-
tion had no involvement in
the case until after the Sup-
reme Court agreed to hear
the city's appeal.
