GM Chairman to Be Bnai Brith Honoree

Roger B. Smith, chair-
man and chief executive of-
ficer of General -Motors
Corp., will be the honoree at
the 1983 Bnai Brith Inter-
national Great American
Traditions Award Dinner, 6
p.m. Nov. 22 at the Westin
Hotel.
The award is presented to
"deserving recipients whose
life, vision, philanthropy,
community leadership and
_ outstanding contribution to
the social and cultural life of
our nation best exemplify
the American tradition of
selfless service."
Smith was born in Col-
umbus, Ohio in 1925. His
family moved to Michigan
where Smith graduated
from Detroit University
School in 1942. He served in
the United States Navy,
1944-1946. Upon comple-
tion of this commission he
resumed his studies at the
University of Michigan
where he received both his
- bachelor's and master's .de-
grees in business administ-
ration.

Smith
1949,
launched his career with
General Motors. On the
civic side, he developed
the General Motors Care
and Share program to as-
sist those in need. He
originated the General
Motors Cancer Research
Awards,- which annually
recognize three scientists
throughout the world.

Community and the Michi-
gan Colleges Foundation,
Inc. In addition, he is a
member of the President's
National Productivity Ad-
visory Committee. He is a
director of the Detroit
Economic Growth Corpora-
tion, Detroit Renaissance,
New Detroit, Inc., and is
first vice chairman for the
United Foundation in De-
troit.
He is a member of the Soc-
iety of Automotive En-
gineers, the Economic Club
and the Links Club in New
York. He has received hon-
orary doctorates from sev-
eral universities as well as
serving on the board of the
Graduate School of Busi-
ness at the University of
Michigan, Stanford Univer-
sity and Harvard.
Proceeds from the dinner
support Bnai Brith's youth
serving agencies: AZA and
BBG for high school youth
and Hillel Foundations on

college campuses.

WZO to Repeat
Summer Aliya
Program in '84

NEW YORK — The
World Zionist Organiza-
tion's (WZO) Mitzva Elef
(Project 1,000) will be re-
peated in 1984, giving sev-
eral hundred North Ameri-
can families the chance to
experience life in Israel, ac-
cording to Moshe Shechter,
director of the Israel Aliya
Center.
The project, inaugurated
this summer, allows
families to live for a month
in one of Israel's absorption
centers, kibutzim, or set-
tlement towns.
Some 250 families par-
ticipated in the project dur-
ing its inaugural year.
