immigrated here from
Germany, began business
under the sign (still hang-
ing outside) "Dakota Inn."
Two years later the word
"Rathskeller" was added
and so, almost from the be-
ginning, the German-
American character of the
inn was established.
The original inn was a
Chinese laundry located
next to a grocery store Karl
had constructed at Dakota
and John R . . . It consisted
of what is now the south-
west corner . . . In 1934, the
room with the current entr-
ance was added along with a
beer garden in the back.

By 1936, the beer gar-
den had made way for
what is now the Main
Room and Keller ... Fi-
nally, a new facade and
the southwest tower were
completed in 1938, and
the building has re-
mained basically un-
changed to this day.

Karl and Katherine have
both passed on . . . and the
inn is now owned and oper-
ated by their children, Ed
Kurz and Hilda Howarth
. . Mae Smith, the "Singing
Waitress," is manager
and Mike Montgomery en-
tertains at the piano on Fri-
day nights . . . Weekend
crowd sing-alongers in the
Main Room are popular.

EVER EAT FRIED
LETTUCE? ... Here's the

recipe from "Kosher Wok-
ing" by Rosanne Schlussel
. . . one head crisp fresh let-
tuce, two tablespoons oil,
one clove garlic, one piece
hot red pepper (optional),
two tablespoons soy, salt to
taste. Sauce: two tables-
poons water, 1 1/2 tables-
poons sherry, one teaspoon

Israeli Soldiers
Slightly Injured

TEL AVIV (JTA) - Two
Israeli soldiers were injured
slightly when a booby-
trapped car exploded near
their jeep on a road south-
east of Tyre in south Leba-
non.
Meanwhile, Israeli army
officers took credit for ef-
fecting the release of a
group of Shouf mountain
Druze kidnapped by Christ-
ian Phalangists in an area
under Israeli control. The
officers summoned the local
Phalangist leaders and in-
formed them that kidnap-
ping would not be tolerated.

sugar, three slivered scall-
ions.
Chop or tear lettuce into
bite sized pieces (1x3").
Heat oil, brown garlic and
pepper. Remove, add soy
and salt, toss in lettuce, stir
fry one minute. Toss sauce
in quickly. If desired, sauce
can be made with a little
cornstarch to thicken.

A HAYSEED
proached a vending
machine, inserted a coin
and pressed the button
labeled, "Coffee, double
cream, and sugar" . . . No
cup appeared, but two noz-
zles began functioning, one
pouring coffee the other
cream . . . After the proper
amounts had gone down the
drain, where the cup should
have been, the machine
stopped pouring.
"Now, that's real automa-
tion," nodded the hayseed
admiringly, "This thing
even drinks for you!"
