Czech Aliya
LONDON — According to
figures released by the In-
ternational Council of Jews
from Czechoslovakia, more
than 20,000 Jews of Czech
origin made aliya to Israel
in the first 20 years after Is-
rael became a state in 1948.
It is estimated an addi-
tional 5,000 Czech Jews
made aliya after the unrest
in Czechoslovakia in 1968-
1969.
award from the League of
Jewish Women's Organi-
zations and the leader-
ship award from the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign-
Israel Emergency Fund.
According to Mrs. Books-
tein, the 50th anniversary
celebration has special
meaning for the women's
service group. Fifty years
ago when the organization
was losing membership
from its senior women's or-
ganization, its then-
President Miriam Wein-
berg asked her daughter to
help rejuvenate the group.
Today, finding itself in a
similar situation, Mrs.
Bookstein approached her
granddaughter, Shari
Klein, to organize young
women to help perpetuate
the charitable services pro-
vided over the past half cen-
tury by the women. The
luncheon will be the occa-
sion for Mrs. Bookstein to
introduce her granddaugh-
ter and to launch a young
women's division.
The luncheon also will
be the occasion to intro-
duce the guests of honor,
Pearl Gold, a representa-
tive of the senior wo-
men's group, and
Maynard M. Feldman of
the men's group.
Tickets for the luncheon
are available by calling the
ticket chairmen, Ann Shif-
man, 557-7990; or Jean
Shifman, 557-7104.
