JERUSALEM (JTA) — Aharon Abu Hatzeira, leader of the Tami party, will serve his three-month prison sentence as a day worker for the police. He will spend his nights at home. The former Cabinet minister ws convicted of embezzling funds from a charitable organization during the 1970s. He was originally given a sus- pended sentence but the Supreme Court ruled on ap- peal earlier this year that he must serve a prison term. Abu Hatzeira said he was willing to go to jail but re- cently had second thoughts, according to newspaper re- ports. Under the law, short-term. prisoners may work off their time outside prison, at the discretion of the senior police officer. The Broadway cast of the hit play "Agnes of God" also appeared this summer in Israel. This fall the Neil Simon/Marvin Hamlisch musical hit "They're Play- ing Our Song" comes to Is- rael with the cast which un- dertook the show's recent successful American tour. Apart from visiting drama, there is constant theater in Israel. The coun- try has four major repertory theaters — Habima, Cam- eri, Haifa and Beersheva Theaters — plus countless small companies. The Habima (Hebrew for "the stage") company was founded in Moscow in 1912, performing plays in Hebrew for the first time in 2,000 years, and now is based, as is the Cameri company, in Tel Aviv. Israeli talent is also ex- ported. In New York, Israeli ballerina Galina Panova is currently starring in the Broadway hit musical, "On Your Toes." "Soul of a Jew," a play by Israeli dramatist Yehoshua Sobil, is cur- rently a major attraction at =- Britain's prestigious Edin- burgh International Festi- val. Elsewhere in Britain, Chaim Topol, the Israeli star of the movie musical "Fiddler On the Roof," is recreating the role of - Tevye the milkman in a London stage revival of the hit show. Dance companies such as Bat Dor and Batsheva ap- pear regularly in Israel and around the world. Other major entertain- ment events this season have included two concerts in Jerusalem's Birket Sul- tan open-air theater — one with Judy Collins, and the second with Simon and Gar- funkel.
