Farmer Jack Chain Boosts
Statue of Liberty Restoration

NEW YORK — The deci-
sion by the Spanish gov-
ernment to replace direct
state subsidies to the
Roman Catholic Church
with a plan that would in-
clude earmarking a fixed
percentage of each tax-
payer's liability for the re-
ligion of his choice has been
criticized by Jewish leaders
in Spain, the New York
Times reported this week.
Citizens would indicate
which faith they wished
their donations to go to by
checking off a box on their
tax return. An atheist could
either leave the space blank
or designate his donation
for "public charity,"
Spanish officials said.
"The system . . . inter-
poses the most repellent
agent of the state — the tax
collector — between a prac-
titioner and his faith," ac-
cording to Samuel To-
ledano, head of the Federa-
tion of Israelite Com-
munities of Spain, which
represents many of the

country's 10,000 to 12,000
Jews. "We reject any system
that leads to the establish-
ment of lists," Toledano
said, referring to the
Holocaust and the Spanish
Inquisition.

Sukkot Melee
Erupts in NY

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The peace of the first day of
Sukkot last Thursday was
marred in the Crown
Heights section of Brook-
lyn, home of the Lubavitch
movement, when a scuffle
broke out reportedly caused
by efforts of police to place a
Hasid in a squad car for al-
legedly throwing a stone at
a bus passing in front of the
Lubavitch synagogue.
In the melee which
erupted when Levi Wein-
garten, 27, of Crown
Heights, the alleged stone
thrower, refused to enter
the squad car because
Jewish law prohibits riding
on the holiday, at least nine
policemen were slightly in-
jured and four Hasidim ar-
rested.
