Schools Start . . . With Fewer Kids

By BORIS SMOLAR

Editor-in-chief emeritus, JTA
(Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.)

The Jewish school year
starts with strong determi-
nation on the part of the or-
ganized Jewish com-
munities — the Jewish fed-

years. There were about
600,000 pupils in the school
system in 1968; there are
currently about 350,000.
The loss would have been
even greater had not the re-
ligious day schools shown
substantial growth in en-
rollment.
Further increases in the
religious all-day schools are
not expected. In fact, en-
rollment in these schools
has begun to level off, ac-
cording to the Council of
Jewish Federations.
The CJF estimates that
there are about a million
Jewish children of school
age in the U.S. A third of
them are not sent to a
Jewish school, their pa-
rents being totally indif-
ferent to giving their
children a Jewish educa-
tion. About another third
drops out from Jewish
schools after Bar Mitzva
or Bat Mitzva. The
minimum of Jewish edu-
cation they received
evaporates during the
years of their growth.
The American Associa-
tion of Jewish Education
(AAJE) was recently recon-
stituted as the Jewish Edu-
cation Service of North
America (JESNA), de-

erations —to intensify their
efforts on behalf of Jewish
education.
Enrollment in Jewish
schools of all types — except
in the religious day schools
— has declined about 45
percent during the last 15

education.
JESNA will concentrate
on providing competent
guidance and assistance in
analyzing community prob-
lems related to Jewish edu-
cation. It will also clarify
the appropriate roles of fed-
erations and in titutional
sponsors of Jewish educa-
tional programs.
Enrollments are affected
by the declining Jewish
birth rate, the breakup of
the family and the inflatio-
nary cost of maintaining a
child in a Jewish school. The
majority of children receiv-
ing Jewish education are
still enrolled in congrega-
tional schools whose per
pupil cost is estimated by
the CJF as being $700 per
year. The cost per pupil in
an all-day school is esti-
mated to average $2,700 a
year.
