Israel Backs Lebanon Cease-Fire

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael welcomed the cease-fire
that went into effect in
Lebanon Monday, expres-
sed hope that it would last
and indicated that Israel
had contributed more to-
ward achieving it than
could be disclosed at this
time.
Commenting on behalf of
the government, Deputy
Foreign Minister Yehuda
Ben-Meir stressed that the
key to a lasting solution in
Lebanon was "the with-
drawal of all foreign forces"
from that country. He said,
"Israel is ready and waiting
to leave, and let us hope that
Syria will see that her occu-
pation of Lebanon has led
only to bloodshed and no-
thing else; and that she will
be ready to get her troops
but of Lebanon."
The cease-fire was Wel-

comed by President Reagan
who told reporters he had
telephoned Lebanese Presi-
dent Amin Gemayel to con-
gratulate him.
Reagan also thanked
Saudi Arabia which he
said had a "very definite
hand" in the success of
the cease-fire negotia-
tions which have been
going on for several.
weeks. Syria, too, he said
"is evidently cooperat-
ing." Only last week,
Reagan and Secretary of
State George Shultz an-
grily accused Syria of
obstructing efforts to end
the fighting in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, reports from
Beirut said that Syrian
