Arens Warns Lebanese Druze

patrol north of the river.
"The bulk of the popu-
lation north of the Awali
is Druze. Will terrorists
be able to settle in the
Shouf? That depends on
the Druze attitude in the
area. If the Druze don't
eject them, we will have
to act," Arens declared.
Arens appealed to the
Lebanese Druze to lift their
blockade of Deir al-Kamar
where an estimated
30,000-40,000 Christians
are besieged.
A gathering Saturday
near the Syrian-Golan
Heights border planned as a
memorial meeting for
Golan Heights Druze leader
Kamal Kanj, who died last
week turned into a political
meeting when Lebanon
Druze leader Walid
Jumblatt mounted a plat-

• Moshe Arens warned the
Druze community of Leba-
non, especially those in the
Shouf Mountain area who
have been locked in fierce
battles with the Christian
Phalangists, that they
should not cooperate with
the Palestinian terrorists
and should expel them from
the area.
Addressing a Likud party
meeting in Kiryat shmona
Tuesday night, Arens said
that if the Druze took no ac-
tion to rid their areas of
Palestinians the IDF would
be forced to take action. He
did not specify what action
would be taken.
He said the IDF would
remain on the Awali River
line as long as this was
necessary for Israel's sec-
urity, and would continue to

Jumblatt addressed sev-
eral thousand Druze from
Israel, the Golan Heights
and Syria who gathered on
both sides of the barbed wire
fence, beneath a United Na-
tions observation post, say-
ing that the fighting in
Lebanon was not only for
the Shouf Mountain region
but for all Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Israeli Druze
met in Galilee to formulate
plans to send food, clothing
and medicine to their Druze
brethren in Lebanon.
Spokesmen said they intend
to ask Israeli officials to
allow the transfer of
supplies collected. Israeli of-
ficials indicated permission
would probably be granted.
