NEW YORK — The Jewish Week in New York reported on a recent inci- dent involving Shaare Zedek Hospital's Pediatric Dialysis Unit, the only such unit for children in Israel. An Arab physician in the Nablus area sent a young Arab child to the hospital, asking that he be examined. As was suspected, the child needed kidney dialysis treatment if he were to sur- vive. His parents lived in an out-of-the-way village, some distance from urban Nablus. How could they possibly bring the boy to Jerusalem three times a week for treatment? After impressing on the parents that their son would die without the hours-long treatments, Shaare Zedek officials worked out a plan. Three times a week the mother leads a donkey carrying the boy from their home village to the city of Nab- lus. They then travel by bus to Jerusalem and a volunteer meets them at the bus station and drives them to the hospital. At the end of the day they make the exhausting return trip.
