Weaver Stella Saper,
whose wall hanging was
presented to then-
President Jimmy Carter
by the late Mrs. Menahem
Begin when she and the
prime minister paid their
first call to the Carters at
the White House, is a
Polish-born artist and
survivor of the Holocaust
whose family settled in
Australia. In 1968, she
made her first visit to Is-
rael, and settled there
permanently in 1973,
where she quickly estab-
lished a reputation as a
craftswoman and
teacher.
Another weaver featured
in Expressions '83, Yael
Galis, was born in Kibutz
Afikim in Israel, and is
self-taught. She has had
one-woman shows through-
out Israel and in the United
States.
Ancient Roman glass,
some of it more than 2,000
years old, is the basis for
vessels and jewelry de-
signed by artist Miriam
Hirszowicz that will be
available at Expressions
'83. The Jerusalem-born ar-
tist then decorates and
enhances the glass with
silver ornamental settings,
creating one-of-a-kind
pieces. The glass she uses is
authentic blown glass that
has been unearthed in ar-
cheological digs throughout
Israel.
Mengi and Dani Yahya
are the first artists to adapt
Turkish decorative and
miniature designs to
cloisonne jewelry enamel-
ing. Mengi studied illumi-
nation and miniature paint-
ing at the University of Is-
tanbul, while Dani, whose
hobby is oriental art, is also
senior urologist at Kaplan
Hospital.
In addition to the
works of these contem-
porary artists and arti-
sans, a special section of
antiquities will be of-
fered. These pieces, 4,000
years old and authenti-
cated by the Rockfeller
Museum in Jerusalem,
are from the Middle
Bronze, Hellenistic, Ro-
man, Islamic and
Crusader periods, and
include bowls, jugs,
lamps and other pieces,
each with historical in-
formation linking it to
some biblical event.
Sunday through Thurs-
day hours for the exhibit are
