The Louis LaMed Literary Fund was for decades the means to encourage Yiddish writers and to enable them to pursue their literary work. In all these activities, Mrs. LaMed had worked closely with her husband. Together with him she par- ticipated in funding the LaMed Auditorium in' the United Hebrew Schools Building on 12 Mile Road, as well as in the other LaMed funded projects. Born Sept. 24, 1903, in Zhirardev, Poland, Esther, daughter of Sholom and Leah Bookstein, came to Detroit with her parents in 1913 at the age of 10. She became a gym teacher after graduating from Detroit Teachers College. She taught for five years in Moore School in Detroit.
