THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 23, 1983 25 Detroit Among Cities to Exhibit Objects of Czech Jewry WASHINGTON (JTA) — Detroit will be among the American cities to exhibit "The Precious Legacy: Judaic Treasures From the Czechoslovak State Collec- tions," a collection of objects depicting the religious and secular life of Czech Jews. About 400 objects from the 140,000-piece collection from the State Jewish Museum of Czechoslovakia in Prague are on loan to the U.S. for the exhibition which opens Nov. 9 at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural His- tory. The items are among 94,000 collected by the Nazis during World War II, when the Hitler forces oc- cupied Czechoslovakia. The items were brought to Prague for a planned "museum of an extinct race." The exhibit will be seen at the Detroit Institute of Arts March 12-May 5, 1985. It also will be dis- played in Miami Beach, New York, San Diego and Hartford, Conn. This is the first time any of the items have been al- lowed to leave Czechos- lovakia. Mark Talisman, life chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Coun- cil and director of the Washington office of the Council of Jewish Federa- tions, described the 15-year effort to bring this about. Talisman said the effort began in 1968 when an as- sistant to the then Rep. Charles Vanik (D-Ohio) and the Congressman, who is of Czech descent, visited the State Jewish Museum in Prague. From then until 1979, Talisman and two Jewish professors were able to view that he called an "incredible sight" of thousands of pieces stored in the museum buildings, including one floor filled with Torah scroll covers. Peggy Loar, director of the Smithsonian Institu- lion's Travelling Exhibi- tion Service which is or- ganizing the exhibit, said that 109 individuals and organizations contri- buted more than $1 mill- ion to bring the exhibit to the U.S. The major gift was from Philip Morris, Inc. Concurrent with the exhibition, children's draw- ings from the Terezin con- centration camp which are also from the Prague museum, will be shown at the Bnai Brith's Klutznick Museum in Washington. These drawings will also be shown at the Jewish Museum in New York. Selections from the draw- ings will be shown at the exhibitions in the other cities. In addition to the "Preci- ous Legacy," a book is being published by Summit Books on the exhibition and study guides and a special chil- drens' book are also being prepared. 553.7111 LaSalle BODY 1E11111 'E BUMPING & PAINTING All work guaranteed Free Estimates Reliable and Experienced since 1930 on all makes of cars 28829 Orchard Lake Rd., between 12 & 13 Mile Farmington Hills, MI. 48018 Max Fleischer Take this for your home... • Hoshanna Rabba Offers Chance at Forgiveness By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.) The seventh day of the Sukkot holiday week is re- garded as a special holiday and given the name "Hoshanna Rabba." One translation of the name "Hoshanna Rabba" is "Many Hoshanot." This in- dicates that the prayer for salvation (i.e. Hosha Na) is repeated many times on this day, making this a special day of salvation. Another translation for this term is "the great sal- vation." This tells us that this is a great day because great acts of salvation can be forthcoming. The Jerusalem Talmud refers to this day as "Yom Arava," "the day of the willow twig" because a number of willow twigs are put together and beaten. "Hoshanna Rabba" might mean "many Wil- lows." The commentaries write that the Almighty told Ab- raham that if his children will not be forgiven on Rosh Hashana they will be forgi- ven on Yom Kippur and if they will not be forgiven on Rosh Hashana they will be forgiven on Yom Kippur and if they will not be forgi- ven on Yom Kippur they will be forgiven on Hoshanna Rabba. There fore Hoshanna Rabba is the last day of the fall holiday season to achieve forgive- ness. and take a trip on the house.
