University in Ramat Gan,
Israel and the nearly 700
persons who attended the
gala function at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek in turn hon-
ored the university with
their record attendance.
Jackier and his wife
Edythe have announced the
formation of the Jackier
Law Library Endowment
Fund at Bar-Ilan to further
enhance what was de-
scribed as the largest law
library in the Middle East.
A second highlight of the
evening, which brought a
warm response from the
large audience, was the an-
nouncement in Yiddish of a
$100,000 endowment by
Moshe and Sarah Friedman
to establish a department at
Bar-Ilan to train Yiddish
teachers in Israel.
Dinner general chair-
man Dr. Martin Hart

Mrs. Friedman told the
audience, "You are not hon-
oring us — you are honoring
the Yiddish language."
Bar-Ilan President Dr.
Emanuel Rackman com-
mented later that the new
Yiddish department also
serves as a tribute to the
memory of the Six Million
who died in the Holocaust,
"the vast majority of whom
spoke Yiddish at home, at
work, at their yeshivas.
Just as Bar-Ilan created an
extensive center for
Holocaust studies, so too is
this unit a tribute to the Six
Million."
The Friedmans were
presented with a framed
map of ancient
Jerusalem in acknow-
ledgement of their

generosity.

in Yiddish and English
and the Friedmans re-
sponded in kind. The
Friedmans said that the
nearly-1,000-year-old
language reached its
height in the last 100
years, comparable to the
classics of Europe and
America.
They said that following
the Holocaust, Yiddish is in
danger of disappearing.
They hoped that others
would follow their example
in contributing to the new
Yiddish department "and
who knows, maybe our
grandchildren or great-
grandchildren will study
the language, will look for
their roots."

Dr. Hart and fellow gen-
eral chairman Norman
Pappas took time during the
evening to mention the
scores of Detroiters who
have worked tirelessly for
Bar-Ilan. They themselves
were cited by Phillip
Stollman, Bar-Ilan's global
board of overseers chair-
man, for their two-year ef-
fort in charge of the annual
dinner.
On a serious note, Dr.
Hart told of recent budget
cuts at all the Israeli uni-
versities of 25-30 percent.
He said the cutbacks could
cost Bar-Ilan $7-10 million
this year.
Dr. Rackman, the major
speaker of the evening,
cautioned the audience
against pessimism. "The
JevSsh people, Israel and its
universities will endure in
spite of one crisis or
another," he said. He de-
scribed Detroit as Bar-Ilan's
"Daddy," describing the
early efforts in the 1950s by
the Stollman family and

ident Dr. Emanuel Rackman.

Jackier on behalf of the uni-
versity.
Dr. Rackman said the
university's problems are
serious, "but let's not lose
our faith. Ten years ago
this week we were in the
midst of the terrible Yom
Kippur War. We were all
depressed. Ten years
later we have peace to the
south (with Egypt). There
are no Katyushas (roc-
kets) from the south.
"A year ago we had the
Lebanon war. Now the Un-
ited States has the problem.
If the U.S. had backed Israel-
(in Lebanon) right to the
end it would not find itself
today-in the position it is in
in Lebanon.
"I can tell you much about
the problems we have," Dr.
Rackman said, "but let's
remember: Israel isn't the
only country in the world
today with economic prob-
lems . . . Yet it is one of the
few that continues to pay its
debts."
He said he is not as wor-
ried about the economic or
ethnic problems in Israel as
he is by the religious gap.

Court Praised

NEW YORK (JTA) — An
Orthodox leader has hailed
recent Supreme Court deci-
sions which he said "under-
score the principle that gov-
ernment is not antagonistic
to religion in this country."
The comment was made
by Julius Berman, an attor-
ney who is president of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
(UOJCA).

programs Bar-Ilan has
created to address Is-
rael's other problems, Dr.
Rackman said Bar-Ilan
established the annual
Conference of Jewish
Unity two years ago with
no fanfare. Rabbis from
all movements meet with
social scientists of all
kinds at the conference
meetings to "find practi-
cal solutions, ease ten-
sion and misunderstand-
ings." Dr. Rackman said,
"The Jewish people can't
afford the luxury of dis-
cord."
At the conclusion of his
speech, Dr. Rackman pre-
sented the Pinhas Churgin
Award to Jackier for his
many efforts on behalf of
Bar-Ilan.
In his response, Jackier
talked of the growth of the
university, and paid tribute
to his wife, "who led me into
community work." The Jac-
kier family was further rep-
resented in the evening's
events when the Jackier
grandchildren recited the
Hamotzi.
Cantor Louis Klein of
Cong. Bnai Moshe led in the
singing of the national an-
thems and Birkat Hama-
zon. Rabbi Robert Abram-
son of Hillel Day School
gave the invocation and.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Shaarey Zedek gave a warm
salute to the Jackiers and
gave the benediction.
