Israel Municipal
Elections Near

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Some
two million Israelis and
permanent residents will go
to local government polls on
Oct. 25 to elect mayors and
local councils in 148
localities.
By the deadline for re-
gistration of party lists and
mayoral candidates at mid-
- night last Saturday, 838
separate lists and the
names of 508 mayoral and
chairmen candidates had
been registered with the
central local government
elections committee.
Candidates for city, town
and village councillors are
voted on according to party
lists, but since the last elec-
tions four years ago mayors
and council chairmen have
been elected on a direct,
popular base.
- Just before the
midngiht deadline, what
the Likud coalition had
feared would be the de-
fection of three major
mayoral candidates
turned out to be only one
— that of Ramat Gan in-
cumbent Mayor Israel
Peled, known outside his
own city for his activities
in local and world Mac-
cabi affairs.
The other two incumbent
mayors who had earlier said
they would run as indepen-
dents, without party back-
?- ing, because of dissatisfac-
tion with some of the names
placed on their council lists
by Likud • headquarters,
reached a compromise and
will be backed by Likud:
- They were Yehezkel
Harmelech, mayor of Re-
hovot, the Eli Landau;
_ mayor of Herzlia.

1 Terrorist Jailed
for Bombing of
Italy Synagogue

ROME (JTA) — A 37-
year-old Italian terrorist,
Francesco Fiorina, sus-
pected of having organized
the bombing of the ' Milan
• Jewish community center
on Sept. 22, 1982, has been
arrested in Milan.
Fiorina is also wanted on
10 other charges, including
two homicides, a series of
burglaries, a bank robbery
and the planting of an exp-
losive charge at a prison
during which one man was
killed and four terrorist
prisoners escaped. The ter-
rorist is the leader of the
ultra-leftist "COLP" or-
ganization.

two years ago.
According to the Jewish
Welcome Service of Vienna,
the Seitenstettengasse
Synagogue hosted the chan-
cellor for the first time in
pointed contrast to the fai-
lure of his predecessor,
Bruno Kreisky, to make an
appearance in the after-
•math of the terrorist as-
sault.
