Fighting hunger has been a major task of the American Jewish Joint Distribu-
tion Committee since 1914 when it was created. The photo above, taken at New
York harbor in 1919, shows rabbis blessing the first shipment of kosher meat sent
to the starving Jews of Poland. This cargo, aboard the S.S. Asburn, was part of $8
million worth of relief supplies shipped that year.

Tel Aviv's beginnings go
back to 1906 when a group
of immigrant Jews picked
an area on the inexpensive
sand dunes north of Jaffa to
build an all-Jewish suburb.
They divided the dunes into
individual lots, leaving
spaces for roads and public
buildings.
Four years later, the
founding fathers gathered
to choose a name for their
new home, and decided on
Tel Aviv, or "hill of Spring."
The town grew rapidly,
with a temporary interrup-
tion during World War I
when the Turks evicted the
Jews from Tel Aviv. After
the war, steamships
brought a fresh wave of im-
migrants to Jaffa harbor,
and new houses sprouted on
the sand dunes.
During the 1921 riots,
when Jews were mas-
sacred in Arab quarters
of Jaffa, the residents of
Tel Aviv realized that
their safety depended on
separate quarters and
their own defense force.
They declared Tel Aviv
an independent township
and elected their own
mayor, established their
own official police force and
organized an unofficial un-
derground movement for
their self-defense.
In the 1936 disturbances,
Jaffa port was closed, pre-
venting Jewish immigrants
from arriving there. So the
people of Tel Aviv took the
initiative and built their
own port near the mouth of
the Yarkon River. By then,
the town had a population of
150,000 and had become the
cultural, commercial and
political center for the Jews
of Eretz Yisrael.
It was also the center of
the defense activities in-
volving the fight by the
Jews for statehood. British
restrictions on immigration
were answered by ships
landing their passengers on
the Tel Aviv shore, where

they quickly dispersed
among swarms of swim-
mers, then scattering in the
all-Jewish city.
After the establishment
of the state in 1948, Jaffa
port was re-opened by
the workers of Tel Aviv.
Both Jaffa and Tel Aviv

r

ports were then kept
busy unloading immig-
rants, as well as supplies
and arms for the new
state struggling for its
survival.
In 1950, the two towns
were united into the present
Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
