By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.) The penitential prayers (Tachnun) are always eliminated from the daily services on days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Yom Kippur is the day when people are forgiven by the Almighty. The peniten- tial prayers of the daily service include confession- als. Since the people have been forgiven, the few days after Yom Kippur and be- fore Sukkot are days of in- nocence and elation. Con- fessions would then be out of order. The rabbis called the first day of Sukkot "the first day of the count of new sins." Thus the feeling of inno- cence prevails at least be- tween Yom Kippur and the Sukkot holiday which follows to encourage the people to try and maintain the condition of purity and innocence. 5744 Population JERUSALEM (JNI) — Israel's population as the new year starts is estimated at 4,110,000 (with 82.9 per- cent being Jewish) by the Central Bureau of Statis- tics. best wishes for a Happy New Year, 5743 nznzn rthr5. in the New Year, may you have joy and peace, happi- ness and prosperity! • Enhance your every holiday celebration with the fine Kosher products of the WESLEY'S QUAKER MAID ICE CREAM COMPANY • ice cream • ices • sherbets dozens of varieties of frozen confections under supervision of the Metropolitan Kashruth Council of Michigan.
