Detroiter Krickstein Headed
for Top of Tennis World?
Aaron Krickstein, the
16-year-old Detroiter who
stunned the tennis world
last week with his upset vic-
tory over Vitas Gerulaitis at
the U.S. Open, seems de-
termined not to let his new-
found celebrity status get
the best of him.
Krickstein is "a very in-
troverted person," accord-
ing to Bob Wood, varsity
tennis coach at
University-Liggett in
Grosse Pointe, where the
tennis phenom has attended
school for the past two
years. "On the court and off,
he's serious and profes-
sional and business like. He
just goes about his business
and gets it done."
Krickstein is the son of
Dr. Herbert Krickstein, a
pathologist at St. John Hos-
pital. The family has long
held membership at Temple
Beth El.
Earlier this summer,
Krickstein became the
youngest player ever to win
the U.S. 18-and-under Na-
tional Championship.
Nevertheless, his youth and

Microwave
Cooking Class
in Oak Park

offer a microwave cooking

Your Microwave," at 1 and 7
p.m. Wednesdays, begin-
ning Oct. 19.
The classes will be taught
by Norma Schonwetter at
the Oak Park Community
Center. There is a fee.

taggio, 547-1331.
inexperience as a profes-
sional netted him a world-
ranking of 489th.
Krickstein's five-set vic-
tory over Gerulaitis, who
was seeded 15th, was
termed the surprise of the
tournament. Although he
lost his next match, to
fourth seed Yannick Noah,
many tennis buffs figure the
Michigan teenager to be one
of the game's future stars.
