THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS DOMINICO'S Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST IT WAS THAT TIME again . . . the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Tele- thon . . . number 18 in the 22-hour spectacular to aid the fight against MD and re- lated neuromuscular disor- ders. The telethon originated from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas . . . and was carried by a "love" network of some 200 stations throughout the country . . . In the Detroit area, local segments were televised on WJBK-TV, Channel 2. Ken Been, son of Mary and Louis Been, was this year's complete script writer (introductions, ev- erything said by hosts, etc.) . . . Hired for five weeks, this was Ken's first telethon . . . He is an English teacher at Marygrove College .. . and does free-lance writing . . . plus being an educa- tional consultant for Chip- pewa Valley schools (Mt. Clemens, Clinton and Macomb townships.) As usual, there was Doug Jacobs and the Red Garter Band making the hours fly . . . Visiting Doug from San Francisco and spending much time at the telethon were his mother and dad, Elizabeth and dental doc George Jacobs ... George retired this year after 52 years practice .. . and did all the driving here from San Francisco ... He and Beth will take much more time going back ... George is a 33rd degree Mason ... and former board member at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. Doug came to Detroit in 1968, after putting bands together and opening Red Garter operations in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, New Orleans and Philadelphia 2. . He opened his own Red Garter Bar on Library back of J.L. Hud- son's . . . which was closed in 1975 . . . Today, Doug's is one of the foremost Dixie- land jazz groups in town .. . ever prevalent with those red and white striped jac- kets . . . and foot-stomping music . . . doing private par- ties, conventions, dances, etc. Jay Roberts, as usual, was a wonderful telethon host . . . and spent much of his time off the cameras thanking musicians there for the recent over-400- people party celebrating his 25 years of "Night Flight" on WJR Radio . (-Jay is probably the only Detroit radio personality who con- tinually plays recording of local jazz artists . . . and they showed their apprecia- tion by the huge party at Presidential Inn, with over 200 not being able to get in ... Gracious Jay's shindig was started by Doug San- ders, whose Surfside .Six group is the Presidential Inn house band. Sheraton-Oaks was the only hotel giving most of the food for the telethon .. . breakfast, cold plates, hors d'oeuvres, desserts . . . plus chefs on the phones .. . Executive Chef Remy Be- rdy, Chef du Provision Joel Gordon, Michael Bough, Fred Boone, Kevin As- pinall, Geri Reim, Rick Ormsby, Bruce Stuart plus others of the kitchen staff . . . and Don Durfee, new food and beverage director at Sheraton-Oaks in Novi. Still at WJBK-TV are wonderful working guys like telethon producer- director Dick Dietrich, producer-director Jay Frommert, who flew in from "doing" the - Lions-Tampa Bay football TV opener .. . both over 30 years at the station . . . floor man Bob Simons, almost 35 years; Errol Forten, over 32 years. So many others giving their time and efforts . . . in- cluding coordinator Rac- keline Hoff, who finally had more than enough phone volunteers. GET WELL WISHES . to Charlotte Rovner .. . in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. ALTHOUGH THE Boardwalk has been open for some time on Orchard Lake Rd., just south of Maple, it has never had a formal grand opening .. . And so this will happen Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. . . . with all 25 shops having sales and specials . . . while magicians, models, mimes and live music entertain along "the walk." GEORGE JACKSON was recently elected senior vice president of Paralized Veterans of America . . . in Portland, Ore. CONGRATS . to Nate Peiss of Specialty Gifts & Printing . . . on his 50th birthday. CHANCES ARE THE biggie reunion of Central and Northern High classes, 1934 more or less . . . will be a weekend affair . . . Iz Malin is the gent to phone . . . for volunteers and attending . . . Also, if you have any Central or North- ern High year books from 1932 on, Iz will appreciate borrowing them . . . Call him at 864-2506. THIS WAS THE first year in 35 that Max Sosin did not sing in the choir for high holidays at Cong. Bnai David . . . He started when Cantor Hyman Adler was in his third year after coming here from Cleveland .. . Now that Cantor Adler has retired, the choir is in limbo and Max is "out of a job." Reason for no choir was that fill-in Cantor Veroba didn't have time to rehearse with one. CONGRATS . . . to fash- ion coordinator Leah Marks . . . on her birthday. kliq FAMILY RESTAURANT 2859 COOLIDGE, 2 Blks.
