THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Detroit Friends to Aid SZ Hospital Pediatric Dialysis The Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem have dedicated the proceeds of their annual dinner to the pediatric dialysis center at the hospi- tal. The dinner will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Drs. Lloyd Paul and Harvey Sabbota are co-chairmen. Shaare Zedek Hospital's first kidney dialysis machines went into opera- tion in 1970. There are 200 new cases of primary ir- reversible kidney failure annually diagnosed in Is- rael and there is an acute need for additional funds to maintain artificial kidney machines. - Dialysis treatment is inconvenient because the patient must go to the hospital three times each week and be connected to an artificial kidney machine for four hours at a time. The dialysis units, which cost $10,000 each, perform the function of the kidney, cleaning the blood and removing waste products from the body's metabolism. The artificial kidney is not a cure — patients do not "recover" with dialysis treatment but are simply kept alive. They must con- tinue their treatment until a kidney transplant is available. For the last 10 years the Detroit Friends of Shaare Sukkot's Fall Date Seen as Test of Faith By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.) The selection of the time of year for Sukkot (fall) has to do with the biblical com- mandment which requires Jews to dwell in temporary Sukkot (shacks) for the holiday week. It is in fall, when the weather gets colder, that a person demonstrates his faith in obeying the Al- mighty's command to dwell in the sukka in spite of the colder temperature. Were it in summer or spring when the weather is warm the sukka might be taken to mean a dwelling of con- venience to escape the heat of the'house. Some feel that the sukka is a symbol of the world in which a person –comes to after this life. He leaves his earthly dwelling and goes to his home in paradise. In the autumn when the leaves fall and the ground hardens we feel a symbol of death. Instead of exhibiting fear and remorse we express joy and confidence because we believe that our departure from this world is only a joy- ous entry into the paradise of the next world. There are also those who contend that one of the pur- poses of the Sukkot holiday is to show the Almighty our appreciatioh for the fall harvest — thus Sukkot oc- curs in the fall.
