The SSSJ demonstration coin- cided with the gathering in Madrid of the representa- tives of 35 nations to sign the final document of the Helsinki Agreement on human rights. The SSSJ also called for the expulsion by the U.S. of Russian diplomats because of the shooting down by the Soviet Union of Korean Air Lines Flight 7 earlier this month. In Madrid, a number of former Jewish refusniks, led by Avital Shcharansky, held a press conference to reiterate the plight of Jews in the USSR.
