Struggle for Soviet Jewry
blew shofarin on the
sidewalk outside the Aerof-
lot office in New York. The
SSSJ demonstration coin-
cided with the gathering in
Madrid of the representa-
tives of 35 nations to sign
the final document of the
Helsinki Agreement on
human rights.
The SSSJ also called
for the expulsion by the
U.S. of Russian diplomats
because of the shooting
down by the Soviet Union
of Korean Air Lines
Flight 7 earlier this
month.
In Madrid, a number of
former Jewish refusniks,
led by Avital Shcharansky,
held a press conference to
reiterate the plight of Jews
in the USSR.
There were reports last
week that the Anti-Zionist
Committee of the Soviet
Public, the Soviet
government-sponsored
group which drew interna-
tional attention last spring
when it claimed that the
majority of Soviet Jews who
desire to leave the USSR
have already left, has in-
creased its activities and es-
tablished offices in most
Soviet cities which have a
Jewish community.

There is no despair so
absolute as that which
comes with the first mo-
