RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA)
The Legislative Assem-
bly of the state of Rio de
Janeiro met in special ses-
sion recently and voted by a
large majority to repeal a
law that established a "Day
of Solidarity with the Pales-
tinian People."
The same legislature had
met last May to establish
Sept. 12 as the "Day of Sol-
idarity," the anniversary of
the massacre of Palestinian
civilians at the Sabra and
Shatila refugee camps in
Beirut. The solidarity day
was inspired by pro-PLO
Deputies.
The Jewish community
protested, pointing out that
the real reason for the "Day
of Solidarity" was not to
mourn the victims of the
massacre but to use the day
to issue anti-Semitic, anti-
Zionist and anti-Israel dec-
larations.
The Socialist Governor
of Rio, Leonel Brizola,
reportedly conceded in
private that he agreed to
the law establishing the
"Day of Solidarity" with-
out realizing its real ob-
jective. He then urged the
assembly to repeal the
law.
In another development,
Brizola declined the request
of Farid Sawan, the PLO
representative in Brazil, to
address the conference of
the Latin American section
of the Socialist Interna-
tional. Sawan's effort to
present a resolution on the
Middle East was also turned
down.

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Magen David Adorn, Is-
rael's emergency medical
service, was unable to pay
its workers their August
salaries because of cash
flow shortage.
MDA has made intensive
efforts in recent weeks to
collect debts owed by Is-
raelis using its services and
received a pledge for quick
payment of its subsidy by
the Health Ministry. How-
ever, the Health Ministry
has yet to receive its funds
from the Finance Ministry.
Meanwhile, the Hadas-
sah Medical Organization
has reached an agreement
with both ministries to
allow it to continue operat-
ing through the current fis-
cal year.

But trade union leaders

the ruling by arbitrator
David Shoham was de-

of hospital-employed doc-

reservations. The decision,
however, is binding on all

within the 22 percent
limit. They said it vio-
lated the national wage
ceiling agreement and
that other groups of
workers will now de-
mand equal increases.
The doctors also won their
demand for shorter hours.
The , arbitrator ordered a
45-hour work week and
stipulated that half of the
hospital staff doctors, par-
ticularly young residents,
work only 42 hours, with
generous overtime pay-
ments.
The agreement ties in-
creased Israeli government
support to U.S. contribu-
tions. There had been
rumors that Hadassah
would have to close.

Eran, Israel's telephone
service for suicide preven-
tion and emotional support,
will conduct a door-to-door
