Hadassah raised over
$48.9 million dollars this
year, announced Beatrice I.
Feldman, national trea-
surer, reported at the recent
national convention held in
Washington, D.C.

"The total monies col-
lected include funds from
endowments, annuities; be-
quests and grants, as well as
the quotas raised directly by
the members," Mrs.
Feldman explained. "We
are particularly grateful for
the increase in bequests in
recent years, not only as a
buffer during a period of in-
flation, but because be-
quests are a concrete ex-
pression of confidence in
Hadassah's work and in the
management of its proj-
ects." She added that the in-
crease in Major Gifts re-
flects "the recognition of the
contribution to world health
that the Hadassah Medical
Organization makes in its
work in basic and applied
research as well as in teach-
ing and patient care."

The Greater Detroit
Chapter raised $490,000 of
this sum.

BLUE CROSS TO COVER
CATARACT SURGERY AT HADASSAH

Blue Cross/Blue Shield
has agreed to insure
patients who avail them-
selves of cataract surgery
applying special techniques
for the implantation of in-
traocular lens, which has
been developed by Dr.
Hanan Zauberman, head of
the Opthamology Depart-
ment at the Hadassah He-
brew Univwersity Medical
Center in Jerusalem.
A new Center of Optical
Rehabilitation has been
made possible by the instal-
lation fo a YAG
Neodymium Laser — the
only one of its kind in the
Middle East — which is
used by the Hadassah team
a few hours before cataract
operations with intraocular
lens implantation to open
the capsule of the cataract
and thus enable a more pre-
cise operation to be pre-
formed.
The laser enables the op-
thamologist to do surgery
and cut membranes in the
eye with amazing accuracy
and precision. Previous las-
ers have been designed for
coagulation only and not for
cutting tissue in the eye.

general of the Hadassah
Medical Organization ex-
plained that because of the
new methods, they are able
to discharge patients with
perfect vision from the Eye
Department only one day
after they undergo cateract
surgery with intraocular
lens implantation.

The Ministry of Economic
Coordination in the Israeli
government has discussed
with Dr. Zauberman the
possibility of encouraging
patients to come from the
United States to benefit
from the new advanced
methods of cataract surgery
developed in Hadassah. For
this purpose, Hadassah
would put the patients into
its new private wing, which
compares, in its accommo-
dations and its excellent
nursing care, with the
standards of the best
American hospitals. Blue
Cross and Blue Shield have
agreed to insure the
cataract patients having
surgery at Hadassah.

Hadassah Medical Organization committee members
Barbara Ben, Harrilee Shevin, Libby Sklar and Susan Dines
are pictured with Susan Yorke, Fund Raising Vice
President. The committee is preparing for the annual tele-
thon which will begin September 25 and for a Special Gifts
Dinner with guest speaker Dr. Shaul Feldman on October 13.
Dr. Feldman was in the first graduating class of the Hebrew
University .Hadassah Medical School. Roberta Lazar who is
also on the committee is not in the picture.

Dr. Penchas concluded:
"The Center would, secon-
darily, encourage tourism,
since patients undergoing
cataract surgery would be
hospitalized for a single day
at Hadassah, and could then
leave the hospital with per-
fect vision to travel around
the country.

The laser is the gift from
Miriam and Alfred Dreis-
man of Merrick, N.Y., in
memory of his parents,
Anna and William Dreis-
man, and from other con-
tributors in Israel and
abroad.
