Cli- maxing the 10 days of peni- tence that began with Rosh Hashana last week, Yom Kippur is the most sacred of the Jewish holy days. It is observed as a solemn fast day from sundown to sundown and is char- acterized by individual and communal spiritual exer- cises to renew one's inner life for the coming year. Its perennial message is that it is possible for human beings to improve their character, to strengthen their ethical conscience and moral re- sponsibility through the rigorous discipline of teshuva, turning away from error and sin. Zst;,4 a Teshuva, the idea of man's ability to change for the better, is regarded as the brightest jewel among the teachings of Judaism, for it is the foundation of op- timism and 'hope. If man had no escape from sin and error, he would be crushed forever. No man is free of sin, but no man can' sink so low that he cannot turn away from wrongdoing if he will only make the effort to change. Judaism does not rec ognize a "point of no re- turn." The gates of peni- tence are never shut even until the day of death. How does one do teshuva, repent? The medieval Jewish philosopher, Maimonides, distilled three stages: recognition of the sin, confession, that is, diagnosis of the illness, ex- pression of regret, which marks the beginning of the healing process; and the resolution to change, to sin no more, followed by a deci- sion to pursue a righteous path. Yom Kippur therefore is not a magical day of pardon; rather this day of prayer and fasting is an annual ex- perience designed to enable fragmented, dislocated man in all his frailty to be re- stored to a state of ethical and spiritual wholeness vps necessary to carry out a mission of redemptive work in the world. It is a message of the synagogue worthy of reflec- tion and commitment on the part of all Jews, and of all men who crave for spiritual integration and human brotherhood. ■■■•■•■ •Th VIDEO PROFILES CORPORRT1ON COMPLETE "BROADCAST" COLOR VIDEOTAPE PRODUCTIONS CALL 354-0438 AND DISCOVER PROFESSIONAL QUALITY (IRWIN DANTO, VIDEOGRAPHER) Nazi Memorial Draws Protest AMSTERDAM (JTA) — Anti-Nazi organizations in Holland protested against plans by right-wing Neder- landse Volksunie (NVU), an organization banned by the authorities.
