With the Hitler regime coming to power on Jan. 30, 1933, a road of incompar- able suffering began for the European Jews, exceeding all sorrows of the past, with the atrocities leaving few families unaffected. Never in history had in- sanity been practiced with such efficiency and dedica- tion. Never before did so many willingly follow their brutal and bloodthirsty 'leader. Another event which took place half-a-century • • •• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • -Wappy new gear • • • • TO OUR MANY FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS • • • • •Hank's Clothes • 28950 Orchard Lake Road • • Between 12 and 13 Mile Roads, Farmington Hills • • • ••••• • 626-7000 II • 626-7007 • • • • • • • •• ago was the book- burning during the night of May 10-11, 1933 in Germany. This appar- ently minor occurrence nevertheless signaled in those huge fires the end of free speech in Ger- many. It became the starting point of what has been termed "education towards death." Jews were intimidated and persecuted. Those who recognized the writing on the wall left early, many for Eretz Yis- rael. Others thought Hitler a passing evil and decided to sit it out, realizing their fatal mistake only when it was much too late. With the conquest of most of Europe in World War II, Hitler's henchmen set out to implement the "final solu- tion." Poland became the main collection and exter- mination ground. There- fore, for many of the partici- pants in the recent official delegation from Israel and abroad which travelled to Warsaw in order to pay tribute to the Jewish upris- ing in the Warsaw Ghetto 40 years ago, this was a journey into a dreadful past. It also meant remember- ing and honoring the brave acts, against unbelievable odds, of the ghetto fighters, who took up arms and died not in the hope of victory but in the conviction that armed revolt against the Nazds symbolized the Jewish de- termination to fight back whatever the cost. An outstanding exam- ple of resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto are the Emanuel Ringelblum Underground Archives, in which the historian and member of the un- derground faithfully re- corded events, docu- ments and material lead- rinimm A rigv, 015V Our best wishes for a year of abundance, peace 5744 and prosperity grand action was completed at 8:15 p.m. The total pro- ven number of captured and liquidated Jews: 56,065." Even that did not include, in his own words, those who perished in the bunkers and sewers. MORRIS , and SYLVIA BOBROFF WISH THEIR FRIENDS & RELATIVES A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR ing to the actual revolt. Parts of it were found in the ruins of the ghetto after the war. Ringelblum himself was captured by the Nazis in March 1944 and shot, to- gether with some Polish friends. As a counterpart we have the Stroop Report, used as evidence at the Nuremberg Trials, kept by SS Com- mander Stroop, who was in charge of the total liquida- slzrzn sow n:v tion of the Warsaw Ghetto. In daily reports to his superior from April 29 to May 16, 1943, he expresses anger and surprise at the stubborn armed Jewish re- sistance. He notes in his final page: "180 Jews, bandits and sub- humans have been de- stroyed. The Jewish resi- dential quarter in Warsaw has ceased to exist. Before the Kol Nidrei is recited on the eve of Yom Kippur a judicial declara- tion is pronounced which gives permission to include any sinners into the group which is praying in the synagogue on Yom Kippur night. Such a proclamation re- quires a Beth Din (rabbini- cal court of three). The can- tor and the two others make up the three. The Torahs are used be- cause the proclamation in- volves the whole commu- nity.
