MORRIS E. BLOOMBERG beneficiaries of Dr. Ehud Spanier's research into the subject of reefs may include those who enjoy sitting down to a good fish dinner. Preliminary results at an artificial reef site off the coast of Israel indicate a large increase in the availability of commer- cially fishable lokus (grouper) — a much prized and expensive fish. If, ac- cording to Dr. Spanier, the artificial reef project is ex- panded, increased catches of lokus could bring down its present price. The artificial reef has been designed to remedy the southeastern Mediterra- nean's — and specifically Israel's — lack of natural reefs, bays, offshore islands and peninsulas. It is this lack of protective structures that make th6 southeastern area the Mediterranean's poorest region in terms of fishing potential. Spanier's answer to the problem — working in connection with resear- We wish our family and friends a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year chers at the Israel Minis- try of Agriculture — was to create an artificial reef from old automobile tires, concrete blocks, fiberglass poles and plas- tic rope. The results from this reef, according to Spanier, have been extremely promising. After nine months of obser- vation of the fish popula- tion, there was a measured 15-fold increase in fish. According to Spanier, plans for the future include the building of more artifi- cial reefs and the expanding of research. "We have to build a solid structure that is capable of withstanding strong waves . . one that will be of op- timal size from the standpoint of ecology and economics. We also have to develop proper methods of fishing these areas and must discover what will happen to the reef popula- tion under commercial fish- ing conditions." , RAY & ZEE BERNSTEIN We wish our family and friends a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year • MINNA & SAM CHIMOFF We wish our family and friends a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year .
