Mentioned in the Bible, these vultures are Israel's largest birds, the female weighing up to 30 pounds. They have been reported dragging off carcasses in ex- cess of 80 pounds with no apparent effort. Although the Nature Re- serve Authority provides feeding stations throughout Israel, many vultures have died after feeding on ani- mals that have ingested poisons. Lappet-faced nestl- ings take nine years to ma- ture, and often migrate to Arabia, never to return. In 1981, only two breed- ing pairs remained in Is- rael. Through these the Tel Aviv University Zoo has slowly raised a mod- est breeding group of about 20 birds.
