According to the director
of the program, Beirut-born
Arlette Adler, the Unit for
Bridging the Gap includes
approximately 1000 stu-
dents, and has placed more
than 300 graduates back
into the community.
With funding provided by
the Sephardic Federation
and the Sephardi depart-
ment of the World Zionist
Organization, the program
searches for those students
desiring to enter the pro-
gram. For those students
who are accepted, schol-
arships are provided. as is
guidance in choosing an
academic program.
In addition to the schol-.
arships, some students are
"adopted" by people who
undertake to finance the
education of a promising
young person.
The Unit for Bridging the
Gap is one answer to a prob-
lem which finds the
Sephardim constituting
more than half of the popu-
lation of Israel, yet -filling
only about one-sixth of the
places in the country's uni-
versities. It is the hope of
those who are involved in
the program, that by help-
ing to close the educational
lzrizn
gap the Sephardim will be-
come more aware of the
need to push their children
towards the universities
