More recently, the kibutz has undergone a radical move towards indus- trialization, and today the average kibutznik is as likely to be found working in industry as in farming. The .230 kibutzim have established some 350 indus- trial enterprises with a total work force of 17,500, of whom almost 80 percent are kibutz members. Industrial products now account for over 50 percent of the total kibutz output. The export value alone of kibutz industrial products is expected to amount to some $300 million this year. The kibutzim have also established a strong base in the tourist industry. Thirty guest houses and camping sites for tourists have been established on kibutzim. To coordinate and pro- mote these non-agricultural endeavors, the Kibutz In- dustries Association (KIA) has been created. The association's central committee includes repre- sentatives of all the kibutz movements and acts as the negotiating body in dealing with the government and other organizations. It also runs educational programs and sales. Recognizing that small kibutz industries do not always have the re- sources to carry out their own research and develop- ment, the association has also taken on the function of a scientific clearing house.
