There has been a dif- ference of opinion among rabbinic authorities as to whether this prohibition still applies during the period when there is no Temple in Jerusalem where the Omer (sheaf of barley of- fering) was to be brought. Since there are some rab- binic sources which claim that the new grain of the past year should not be used until the second day of the current Passover any time or place some very religious Jews have refrained from using products (e.g. bread, etc.) made from the newer grains until the second day of the current Passover. This restriction falls into a group of restric- tions that prohibit the use of certain kinds of food until a portion of that food has been brought to the temple as an offering.
