is the day on which all the
creatures of the earth stand
under judgment."
These phrases are from
the Mahzor, the Hebrew
prayer book that is used for
the worship services of the
Jewish people on Rosh
Hashana
The High Holy Days of
Rosh Hashana, climaxed by
Yam Kippur, the Day of
Atonement, are solemn
days that express the uni-
versal human need for self-
purification, for taking in-
ventory of one's self, pro-
bing the meaning and pur-
pose of one's individual and
group existence, and then
seeking through fasting and
repentance to change them
for the better.
It was not too long ago
that many skeptical,
sophisticated 20th Cen-
tury people looked upon
such religious ideas and
practices with elegant
disdain and smug
superiority. But self-
indulgent, narcissistic
human beings eventually
had to face the inescapa-
ble and frightening re-
cord of an age of violence,
injustice, and corruption
that dispensed with the
biblical moral disciplines
and legal norms and gave
birth to Hiroshima,
Dachau and Auschwitz,
Afghanistan, Poland, Ire-
land, the PLO, Sakharov
and Soviet Jewry and
Vietnam.
There are very few pre-
tensions left about the vau-
nted innate moral
superiorities of modern
Man, his belief in the in-
evitability of progress
toward Utopia, nor in mes-
sianic science and technolgy
as absolute unmixed
blessings of secular salva-
tion.
Man ultimately is a
paradox, as Jewish tradi-
tion has always affirmed.
He is both glorious creator
and destructive creature;
and his creatufeliness is
compounded of the sinful
idolatries, the false gods of
power, egotism, greed and
pride.
Rosh Hashana and the
Jewish holy day period of
penitence are in effect
moral sensitivity systems,
human potential move-
ments which evolved over
3,000 years of Jewish
agonizing and hard testing
about how to transform this
creative into a humane,
compassionate personality
modeled in the Divine Im-
age. It is also a source of in-
sight and spiritual power to
help achieve an ethical
community, a kingdom of
priests and a holy nation,
committed to help redeem
and heal a broken and suf-
fering world through deeds
of decency, mutual respect,
justice, kindness and
civilized values.
It is in that spirit of Rosh
