THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Zuckerman Tribute to Jackson Cites Scoop's Humanitarianism Heads of Jewish move- ments in this country and throughout the world joined in paying honor to the memory of Senator Henry Jackson (D-Wash.), who died Friday morning. Paul Zuckerman, who was among his closest friends and recalled Jackson's "courageous ef- forts to assure security for Israel and to protect the Jews in the Soviet Union against the rising tide of anti-Semitism there," had a special tribute in behalf of himself and his wife Helen. He especially recalled the encouragement he received from "Scoop" Jackson when Zuckerman headed the United Jewish Appeal and in his communal labors through the many years of their friendship. There were far fewer than usual problems associated with the opening of the school year. Only a handful of schools failed to open on time — as 'against dozens or even hun- dreds in previous years — mainly because of non- completion of building or repair work. In one or two schools par- ents kept their children back because of what they said were insufficient secu- rity measures taken at schools situated near bus depots or "problematic" streets.
