THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel's Fallen Soldiers Remembered at Mt. Herzl Memorial Site in Jerusalem By JANET MENDELSOHN MOSHE World Zionist Press Service Israel national sentiment is clearly expressed at sites all over the land — streets, squares, parks, monu- ments, forests. One of them is Jerusalem's Mt. Herzl, actually a lovely green hill- ock. It is perhaps the most important site of all. On its western slope is Yad Vashem, the Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, which has been founded to perpetuate the memory of those six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. Topping the slope of Mt. Herzl is the grave of the founder of mod- ern Zionism Theodor Herzl, who visualized the Jewish state 50 years before its birth in 1948. His remains were inter- red on this ridge in Israel's capital in August 1949, 45 years after his death in Vie- nna. Other important per- sons buried here include former Prime Ministers Golda Meir and Levi Eshkol, revisionist leader- philosopher Ze'ev Jabotinsky, and former presidents of the World Zionist Organization. (David Ben-Gurion was buried, at his request, in his desert home, Kibutz Sde Boker.) A little further down the hill, however, only the twittering of birds and the sigh of the wind through the trees breaks the silence of the Mt. Herzl Military Cemetery. Perhaps a lone mother or wife weeps silently as her own personal grief over- whelms her. In this solemn spot, over 3,000 of Israel's finest young men and women are buried. In the War of Inde- pendence alone, 6,000 lives were lost, including 4,000 soldiers — about one per- cent of the population in 1948; and their graves are to be found in every part of Israel's soil. The Mt. Herzl Military Cemetery represents a cross-section of Israel's his- tory, before and after state- hood. Row upon row, hewn from the rock of Jerusalem's hills, the graves are as one — from the final resting place of the young recruit to In loving memory of dear husband, father and grandfather HAROLD ORMAN Who passed away Sept. 18, 1977.
