THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS EEC Actions • THE WHITE HOUSE The heads of government of the 10 European Eco- nomic Community coun- tries met in Stuttgart in June and welcomed the Israel-Lebanon accord. They decided to lift the eco- nomic sanctions the EEC imposed on Israel when it invaded Lebanon in June 1982. WASHINGTON The Karaites were a Jewish sect founded in the Eighth Century who be- lieved in Biblical law but re- fused to recognize Talmudic law. The Karaites gained many followers, but began to decline in the 10th Cen- tury. We know that Rosh Hashanah, the New Year, is a time for introspection, reflection, and renewal. It is also a time when members of the Jewish Faith reex- amine the year past and look to the one ahead in a spirit of prayer and hopefulness. Ten days later, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is a solemn period of fasting and penitence which cul- minates the High Holy Days. For all of you this is an especially thoughtful season, and we join fellow Americans in sharing your hopes and aspirations for peace and human understanding and for an end to hatred and violence. As the shofar calls Jews to their places of worship during this period, our thoughts and warm good wishes will be with you. May the year 5744 bring health , prosperity, and peace to you and your families. DAVID GEFFEN World Zionist Press Service Thursday, April 8, fell almost a month before the new State of Israel came into being, yet on that day thirty-five years ago the Synagogue Council of America called for a "day of intercession on behalf of our brothers in Palestine and of protest against our Gov- ernment's attempt to nul- lify the United Nations' de — cision on Palestine." Thousands of Jews all over the United States went to their synagogues late in the afternoon to participate in a service and to express = their disenchantment with the apparent flip-flop policy of Secretary of State Mar- shall and President Tru- man. That day in April set the stage for the feverish weeks which followed, ul- timately leading to the proc- lamation of statehood. As the days passed, many questions were raised both inside the Jewish communities and outside of them. Would the state be recognized by the U.S. government? What would Russia do? Would the Arab coun- tries destroy Israel be- fore it really came into being? It was even asked whether another holocaust might not be in the making. In Cincinnati, on May 10, a community rally was held to raise funds for the state- to-be. The guest speaker was Reuven Dafni of the Hagana, (Israel's pre-state defense force). He chal- lenged those attending with these stirring words: "We are locked in one gigantic struggle for the survival of Judaism," he stressed. "If Palestine is crushed, there is no future for Judaism anywhere." A sum of $887,000 was pledged that night for the emergency. As a young boy, I recall the tension in our household in Atlanta during the week before May 14. My parents' involvement in the Zionist cause and my grandfather's lifelong dedication to the founding of a Jewish state had left its impression on me as well. • On Friday, the 14th of May, I came home from school and started to get ready for Shabat. When my parents came home from work, the birth of our new state was uppermost in their minds.
