"I deal with everything from poorly trained teachers to too many lice and too little flour." This is how Seymour Eps- tein described a day, in his life as a communal worker in Morocco, where he is working as an educational consultant in schools funded by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). What Epstein encounters in his daily work is cer- tainly very different from what Lynn Hazan, Hillel di- rector at the University of Illinois, or Conrad Koller, budget and planning asso- ciate of the Jewish Federa- tion of Greater Dallas come across. Yet all three have something in common: They all were trained at Brandeis University and graduated from the Ben- jamin S. Hornstein Pro- gram in Jewish Com- munal Service. Although Brandeis Uni- versity is a nonsectarian liberal arts university with high academic ranking among American institu- tions of higher education, it is a university that is strongly committed to its Jewish roots. It was the American Jewish commu- nity that built this univer- sity, and it is that commu- nity that sustains it. Bran- deis' Jewish roots; and its commitment to them, are particularly visible when scanning the university's course catalog. Unlike other similar uni- versities, this one offers more than 100 courses in the field of Judaic studies. Courses range from "Be- ginning Hebrew" to "Jewish Identity in the Modern World." In addition, the Univer- sity offers a graduate course of study that trains young women and men who plan to work within Jewish com- munities. It is that program that trained Epstein, Hazan and Koller, and 200 others. Though the program is young, it has established itself as a forerunner in this country in the educa- tion and training of Jewish community lead- ers. Until the Hornstein Pro- gram was established in 1969, the conventional route to leadership posts was through a standard de- gree in social work. Prof. Bernard Reisman, director of the program since its in- ception, points out that a graduate degree in social work at another school does not concern itself with is- sues that are particular to a Jewish communal worker. Within the Brandeis pro- gram, issues dealing with Jewish identity, courses in Jewish history and thought, questions concerning the problems and dilemmas associated with Isradl. and Diaspora relations, are part of the curriculum. In the 14 years since its inception, the Hornstein Program in Jewish Corn- munal Studies has estab- lished a solid base of achievement and won the respect of the Jewish com- munity. Today, its 200 graduates are holding responsible positions in Jewish schools, federations, community Time Passes in Tunisia We wish our family and friends a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year , centers and communal in- stitutions from Maine to Morocco.
