Tel Aviv University sci- entists call their product "Emulsan" because it emul- sifies or enables oil to mix- with water. They say it has a vast range of potential ap- plications, from improving the flow of oil in cold pipes to the production of cosmetics. "Our discovery combines ecology and economics. While most scientific work elsewhere is based on breaking down chemicals and insecticides, we want to recover them and then put them to use," Prof. Eugene Rosenberg, a microbiologist says. The TAU discovery is the continuation of re- search Prof. Rosenberg did in the early 1970s with his partner, Prof. David Gutnick. At the time, they found that 'oil-eating" bacteria could be used as an environmental "oil mopper" to break down residual oil in tankers and prevent the damage of oil spills. About 1 percent of oil transported in tankers is washed into the sea through accidental oil spills or the deliberate discharge of con- taminated ballast water be- fore the tankers are refuel- led, the scientists say. Determined to find out how the bacteria actually clean out the tankers, the Israeli team discovered after years of experimenta- tion that the microbes secrete a very strong "biological detergent." The scientists analyzed its chemical make-up and now produce the compound, Emulsan, chemically in the laboratory in huge fermen- ters of 50,000 and 100,000 liters. In developing this method of flushing out oil tankers with the Emulsan prepara- tion, Prof. Rosenberg, 47, and Prof. Gutnick, 43, im- migrants to Israel who are American-born and edu- cated at California univer- sities, further discovered that the presence of Emul- san creates a stable oil- water mix which is capable of burning efficiently. They found that when the Emulsan is added to the tankers, the oil floats to the surface in droplets they call Emulsanosol — oil covered with a thin coat of Emulsan and then a layer of water. One of the potential applica- tions being explored is the use of the Emul- sanosol, which contains up to 25 percent water, as a fuel source, reports Prof. Rosenberg. According to Prof. Rosen- berg, mixtures of fuel and water are known to burn more efficiently and to be less pollutant; they have al- ready been used in some racing cars and aircraft through mechanical injec- tion systems. The Emulsan makes it possible for the first time to stabilize oil in water through a bio- chemical method. While there is currently a world oil glut, fuel is still very expensive and an acute problem for households dur- ing the cold winter months. The Israeli team says the potential use for the Emul- san of adding it to fuel, so that water can be added, will save about 10 percent in oil. The fuel is expected to burn just as efficiently, they say. Among the many other possible uses for Emulsan that the scientists envision is the thinning of fuel in pipelines. Heavy oil is dif- ficult to pump. This problem is especially serious in very cold places, such as Alaska, where energy is consumed to heat the oil before it can be pumped. The scientists found that Emulsan can also be used to extract oil from tar sands, a process which has remained largely untapped due to the technological diffi- culties involved. Since Emulsan can also bind with metals, it could potentially be used to purify waste water and remove toxic metallic substances, such as uranium, particu- larly from atomic energy plant wastes. Because of its versatility and efficiency as a bio- emulsifier, the scientists be- lieve the Emulsan can be Dulzin Discusses the Issues at World Zionist Congress n1t3 72,$),„, -mor May the coming used in a wide variety of industrial applications, in fields ranging from cosme- tics, pharmaceuticals and paints to fertilizers, textiles and detergents. TAU signed an agree- ment with Petroferm U.S.A., a company in Amelia, Fla., which has worldwide rights to market the chemical. Prof. Rosen- berg said he believes that scientists are only begin- ning to tap the potential for exploiting bacteria for industrial use.
