Iran-Iraq War Drops Oil Price'
NEW YORK — Calling
the Iran-Iraq war a "sword
of Damocles hanging over
the world oil markets," a
noted economist predicted
last week that the continu-
ing conflict would lead to a
weakening of Saudi
Arabia's political clout,
further cutbacks in oil
prices, and a "strengthen-
ing and lengthening" of the
current oil glut.
Dr. Eliyahu Kanovsky,
who gained renown in world
diplomatic and financial
circles when he correctly
foresaw both the oil glut and
downslide in OPEC's power
two years before either
Washington or Wall Street
did, made his predictions at
a news conference spon-
sored by the American
Jewish Committee.
Dr. Kanovsky noted that
Iran's economy was improv-
ing while Iraq's was deter-
iorating. Although these
two trends seemed to point
in opposite directions, he
said, they would both lead to
the same result: growing
pressure on the Arab oil-
producing' countries to in-
crease their oil production.
This in turn, Dr.
Kanovsky continued,
would weaken the
Saudis' ability to gain
political power by
threatening production
cutbacks — while also
weakening oil prices.
"Since 1982 Iran has re-
versed its oil policies and
has undertaken an all-out
drive to enhance oil exports
and revenues. Its economy
has been improving, and it
is planning large invest-
ments in the civilian
economy while continuing
to prosecute the war. This
implies a growing need for
oil revenues.
"Iraq's financial situa-
tion, on the other hand, has
been steadily deteriorating.
Because of the war its oil
exports have dropped to
one-fourth of their pre-war
level while expenditures
have risen to far higher
levels, and it is increasingly
dependent on financial aid,
mainly from Saudi Arabia
and Kuwait.
"This is taking place
while oil markets have been
weakening, and Saudi and
Kuwaiti oil revenues have
declined sharply. The cost of
helping to sustain Iraq adds
to the financial strains on
the Saudis and Kuwaitis,
and this growing drain puts
pressure an them to
enhance oil exports.
"Their fear of revolu-
tionary Iran prevents
them from curtailing aid
to Iraq, and any attempt
on their part to raise the
volume of oil exports puts
additional downward
pressure on oil prices . . .
"As for the world oil mar-
kets, the Iran-Iraq war is
like the Sword of Damocles,
threatening further price
cutbacks."
Moreover, declared Prof.
Kanovsky, "cessation of
hostilities would lead to
Iraq's greatly increasing its
oil exports so as to reduce its

Ringelblum Chronicle of Life
in Warsaw Ghetto Displayed
By SUSAN BIRNBAUM
(Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.)
"At the time that we write
you, 95 percent of Polish
Jews have already perished
With these words,
Emanuel Ringelblum
began his last letter, dated
March 1, 1944, written to
YIVO Institute for Jewish
Research in New York.
Within a week, Ringelblum
was dead, shot by gestapo
officers alongside his wife
and 12-year-old son in the
ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto,
having been taken there
from the bunkers where
they were found hiding
along with 35 others.
Ringelblum, eminent
scholar of Polish Jewry,
paid the ultimate price for
having dared to outlive the
Nazi dragnet in what was
once the largest Jewish
community in Europe. And
precisely becauseakof his
courage to defy the most
desperate situations, and to
continue writing about
them, the world is in posses-
sion of the intimate details
of life in the Warsaw
Ghetto, and of its dying
gasps.
In keeping with the
worldwide commemora-
tive activities of the War-
saw Uprising's 40th an-
niversary, YIVO, has ex-
tended its exhibit of
Ringelblum's ongoing
chronicle of daily life in
the Warsaw Ghetto. The
exhibit, which opened
March 13, will run
through Oct. 2.
On display are excerpts
from the diaries of
Ringelblum and other Jews
in hiding; reports on daily
life, shootings, mass depor-
tations; proclamations of
food rationing and ration
coupons; I.D. cards; graphs
and charts of typhus cases
and lists of the dead; short
stories and poems, and ac-
counts of the cultural life
which continued through-
out the Ghetto's existence;
selected samples of the ap-
proximately 50 journals and
bulletins published within
the Ghetto by the various
political and religious
movements active through
the duration of the Ghetto,
and moving photographs of
the life and death of a vib-
rant community.
Among the documents on
exhibit is a letter from
workers in a tailor shop to
Adam Czerniakow, chair-
man of the Judenrat, the
Jewish Council. A hand-
written note appears on top
of the typed letter, indicat-
ing the letter had never
been sent for fear of repris-
als. (Czerniakow committed
suicide when the Nazis gave
him orders to administer
the deportation of Jews
from the Ghetto.)
The material on view in
New York is but a fraction
of the extant documents.
May the coming
growing foreign debt, re-
construct and develop its
economy, and rebuild its
armed forces.
