Hillel's Beit Midrash pro-
gram will offer non-credit
Judaic studies in Hebrew,
Yiddish, • Talmud, the
Arab-Israeli conflict, Can-
tillations and Jewish cook-
ery. The courses begin in
October and run for nine
weeks. For information, call

Hill Street Cinema, the
student-operated film
series, will begin its season
in October. An open meet-
ing will be held on Sept. 14
at 7:30 p.m.
Progressive
The
Zionist Caucus opens the
'year with a barbecue and
picnic on Sept. 25 at 2:30
p.m.
The grad students group
will start off the year with a
sukka-decorating party at
Hillel on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
On Sept. 24, it will sponsor a
wine and cheese party at 9
p.m. at Hillel.
The student United
Jewish Appeal open meet-
ing will be held Sept. 26 at 8
p.m. at Hillel. Dessert and
coffee will be served.
On Sept. 12 at noon Hillel
will sponsor the second an-
nual performance of the
Pachelbel Canon. The per-
formance will take place on
the Diag in central campus.
Author Elie Wiesel will
speak at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at
the Rackham Au-
ditorium. Wiesel's topic is
"To Be a Jew: The Jewish
and Human Conditions."

Named to Bar-Han Posts
The Bar-Ilan University
fund-raising team has
named Jack Zwick as
chairman of the Bar-Ilan
Endowment Committee,
and Dr. Lawrence Loe-
wenthal to head the effort
on behalf of the Faculty of
Jewish Studies.
Zwick is president of the
Jewish National Fund, on
the board of trustees of
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments, and is scholarship
committee chairman of
Akiva Hebrew Day School.
He is a past president of
Young Israel Southfield and
is treasurer of AKIM (Israel
Association for the Ad-
vancement of the Retarded).
Dr. Loewenthal has been
involved with Bar-Ilan ac-
tivities for a number of
years. He is a past president
of Young Israel of South-
field, chaired its building
committee, and is currently
its chairman of the board.
He served as president of

wenthal is vice president

School, as well as a past
chairman of Akiva's cap-

Modai Returns
From Egypt Trip
TEL . AVIV (JTA) —
Energy Minister Yitzhak
Modai returned home from
a three-day official visit to
Egypt and expressed hopes
that the current "cold peace
relations" between Egypt
and Israel would "warm up
shortly."
Modai was the first Is-
raeli Cabinet minister to
visit Egypt while serving in
the Cabinet since the cool-
ing off of relations between
the two countries with the
start of the war in Lebanon.'
