Bar-Ilan U. Is Studying Early Factors in Behavior RAMAT GAN — Chil- dren who are cuddled by their parents during in- fancy will remain demon- strative and affectionate throughout their lives. Babies who aren't fondled may well object to this form of intimacy in later life. Mothers who take certain medications during preg- nancy may give birth to hyperactive children. These are among re- cent findings by resear- chers at Bar-Ilan Univer- sity in Israel who are studying some of the ear- liest influences on human development and be- havior. "Most human beings are born with distinctly recog- nizable personality char- acteristics," says Dr. Malca Alexsandrowicz of Bar- Ilan's psychology depart- ment. "If we are to influence their behavior, the best time to do it is before the age of three." The Bar-Ilan psychol- ogist's findings have led to an experimental program for expectant parents in Shikun Daled, a low-income housing project in Jaffa. The program, conducted by psychologists and nurses, includes instruction in how a child learns and grows, is- sues in parenthood and preparation for delivery. Bar-Ilan University psy- chologists also met weekly with kindergarten chil- dren to help them translate their feelings into words and thus overcome a hand- icap common to culturally disadvantaged children; an inability to articulate emo- tions and a tendency to act them out instead.
