The Aftermath

The Israeli commission of
inquiry into the Beirut ref-
ugee camp massacre of
Palestinians called in Feb-
ruary for the resignation of
Ariel Sharon or his dismis-
sal by Menahem Begin for
willfully ignoring the obvi-
ous danger of "vengeance
and bloodshed" against civi-
lians when it allowed armed
Christian Phalangists to
enter the west Beirut camps
last September.
The panel's recom-
mendations were approved
by the Cabinet and Sharon
resigned from his Defense
Ministry post only to be re-
tained in the Cabinet as
Minister-Without-Portfolio.
Moshe Arens, Israel's Am-
bassador to the U.S., was
appointed Defense Minis-
ter.
While the Cabinet was
meeting, a hand grenade
was thrown into a group of
Peace Now demonstrators
opposite the Prime Minis-
ter's Office, killing Emil
Grunzweig and injuring
nine others.

July's Exports
Boost Israel's -
Diamond Industr3

RAMAT GAN — The Is-
rael diamond industry cele-
brated its first $100
million-plus export month
in more than 21/2 years with
shipments of polished
diamonds valued at $109
million during July 1983,
nearly double, that of the
same month last year. The
last month when net ex-
ports exceeded $100 million
was January 1981.
This increased export
total brought the industry's
overseas sales during the
first seven months of 1983
to $623 million, compared to
$544 million last year, ac-
cording to figures released
by the Israel Diamond Insti-
tute.
A growing United States
market is said to be the
focus of this increase in cut
diamond sales.

Too low are they who
build beneath the stars.

Double Standard

Got a question?

Actress Jane Fonda last
December condemned the
"double standard" applied
to Israel since the war in
Lebanon and attributed this
to the tendency of many in-
dividuals to have "knee
jerk" reactions on behalf of
Third World countries.

According to "A Dictio-
nary of Jewish Names and
Their History," the name
Abzug means "copy-sheet,"
"proof-sheet," and is taken
from the printing trade.
