David Altman, director-
general of Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity in Ramat Gan, will be
the speaker at a reception to
be held in his honor Tues-
day in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Emery Klein, an-
nounced Dr. Martin Hart
and Norman A. Pappas,
general chairmen.
Altman is the youngest
person in Israel to hold the
position of a university
director-general. In this
position he is responsible for
the entire budgetary and
administrative needs of
Bar-Ilan's 11,000 students,
1,000 faculty members, and
700 administrative and
maintenance personnel.

In addition, he is respon-
sible for the physical plant
that includes the main
Ramat Gan campus and the
four extension campuses
and facilities located in
Jerusalem, Ashkelon, Safed
and the Jordan Valley.

He will discuss the
challenges and oppor-
tunities that the uni-
versity faces, including
the greatly increased cir-
cle of friends world-wide
who have mobilized to
•help Bar-Ilan thrive de-
spite Israel's economic
difficulties.

Altman has been associ-
ated with Bar-Ilan since
1969 as a student or
member of the administra-
tion. Born in Jerusalem in
1941, he had administrative
experience with Tel Aviv
District Court and as
president of the court work-
ers' union.
He was elected president
of the Bar-Ilan Student
Association in 1972 and of
the Israel National Student
Union in 1973. Altman was
named special assistant to
Bar-Ilan's director general
in 1974, deputy director
general in 1975 and was
named director general of
the university in 1981.
The Kleins, the recep-
tion's hosts, have been
active on behalf of Bar-Ilan
for a number of years. Klein
chaired two dinners for the
university -in 1979 and
1980, and was instrumental
in broadening Bar-Ilan's
base of support in Detroit.
He currently is a member of
its American Board of Over-
seers. Mrs. Klein is a past
Bar-Ilan arrangements
chairman, and has assisted
in revitalizing the Ameri-
can Women for Bar-Ilan.

The meeting is a pre-
lude to the annual Bar-
Ilan dinner, to be held
Sept. 20 at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. Joseph H. Jackier
will be honored.

The sisterhood and men's
club of Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses will co-sponsor
a family picnic 10 a.m.-4
p.m. Sunday at Beechwood
Park, Southfield.
Hot dogs and watermelon
will be sold. Beverages will
be provided free of charge.
There will be games,
swimming and prizes.
