War Resistance Commemorated at Interfaith Event Thursday
Jan Karski, Polish-born,
underground courier for the
anti-Nazi underground
organization during World
War II, will be the guest
speaker at a joint Jewish -
Polish - Ukrainian Ameri-
can commemoration, "Re-
sistance to Tyranny" to be
held at Mercy College au-
ditorium at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday.
The program is part of a
coalition sponsored locally
by the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit and the Detroit Chap-
ter, American Jewish
Committee. National ef-
forts along these lines have
been fostered by the Polish
American - American
Jewish Committee
Dialogue.
Karski, who related his
war experiences in the book,
"Story of a Secret State," is a
recipient of the title "Right-
eous Gentile" from the Fed-
eration of the Jewish Asso-
ciations in California. In
Jerusalem, a tree bearing
his name has been planted
in the Avenue of the Right-
eous at Yad Vashem.
A member of the Polish
diplomatic service until
1939 when he was taken
prisoner by the Red
Army, he escaped to

work with the resistance
movement. His knowl-
edge of languages and
foreign countries was
teaching Eastern European
affairs, comparative gov-
erment and international
affairs. He has also been
visiting professor at
Columbia University.
The U.S. State Depart-
ment sent Karski on six-
month lecture tours to 16
countries in Asia and Af-
rica. In 1974, he was
awarded a Fulbright schol-
arship to inspect Polish,
British and French archives
for his major work, "The
Great Powers and Poland

He refused to return to
Poland after the war and
