'Dallas' Based
Musical Is Hit

Reform Assail
NY 'Get' Bill

NEW YORK — "Gullas,"
a musical comedy along the
lines of the American tele-
vision series "Dallas," re-
cently staged a successful
run in Israel.

NEW YORK — The
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations and its New
York affiliate, the New
York Federation of Reform
Synagogues, voiced "dis-
may and disappointment"
at the action of Gov. Mario
Cuomo in signing the so-
called "get" bill that would
require any person seeking
a divorce to attest that no
barrier — such as the ab-
sence of a religious divorce
— exists to a subsequent
remarriage.

"Gullas," which means
"Diaspora" in both Hebrew
and Yiddish, tells the story
of a Jewish family in Dallas
and their decision to emi-
grate to Israel. "Dallas" is
one of Israel's top-rated
television shows.

The two groups called the
measure "clearly uncon-
stitutional" and said they
would support a legal chal-
lenge to the measure.

Former Flint
Man Is Israel
Murder Suspect

1

TEL AVIV — A former
Flint, Mich., resident is
being held as a suspect in
the murder of two Russian
Orthodox nuns at a
Jerusalem convent.
Police arrested Aloysius
Jay Garrow late last month
for questioning in the May
20 stabbings of Barbara
Vaspenko, 68, and her
daughter, Veronika, 43.
A Jerusalem court or-
dered Garrow to remain in
custody after police said
that under questioning he
gave details only the killer
could know.
